About
Steve & Kate's Camp offers a flexible day camp where campers choose their own activities and plan their own days. All camp hours, snacks and lunch, and any activities that interest each child are included in a single all-inclusive rate, with no additional fees beyond that rate.
• Ages: 4–13 years old
• Schedule: Camp runs from 8am–6pm, with all camp hours included in the camp fee.
Steve & Kate’s Camp runs summer day camps for kids aged 4–12, with a summer program designed for children entering PreK through 7th grade, and generally accepts children aged 4 to 13 years old. Holiday camps are for kids ages 4–12, and if a camper turns 14 while attending summer camp, they may finish out the summer. Steve & Kate's Camp also offers mentorship programs for children aged 14 and 15, with availability that may vary by location. All campers must be fully toilet trained, able to speak up for their needs, and able to get through the camp day without a nap, and no paperwork is required for age verification during registration.
Parents can buy any number of days to use whenever and wherever they’d like throughout the summer, or they can buy a Summer Pass for unlimited use. Drop-off and pick-up can occur at any time within camp hours, and tasty meals and snacks are included in the camp fee. Parents receive automatic full refunds for any unused purchased Day Passes at the end of summer, and if a Summer Pass is underused, the difference compared with the daily rate is automatically refunded. Parents also receive a Virtual Orientation link by email before camp starts.
Steve & Kate’s Camp states that when kids are empowered to make their own choices and be their own bosses, they discover new reserves of confidence, resiliency, and creativity. The organization has been operating since 1980 and has more than 90 locations, and its About page notes that it has spawned more than 70 “islands of freedom” from Manhattan to Manhattan Beach. The camp is staffed with people who share a talent for connecting with kids, and staff focus on showing kids what can be done rather than telling them what to do, while celebrating each individual by enabling campers to express themselves freely as staff cheer them on.
The camp was founded by Steve Susskind and Kate Susskind, and its leadership team also includes Kevin (VP) and Mike (VP). Andrew Stanton, Director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, says that “kids find their thumbprint at Steve & Kate’s,” and Apple’s Hot News has written that “if kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve and Kate’s Camp.” Variety magazine notes that many children of people working at Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic attend, and The Washington Post describes Steve & Kate’s Camp as blending a traditional camp experience with a modern, tech-savvy touch. The Chicago Tribune has written that “working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.”
