The Community Dance Program offers classes in Jazz Dance, Musical Theater Dance, Hip Hop, Teen/Adult Ballet II, Basic Ballet, Pre-Ballet, Ballet I, and Pre-Dance. It also includes short summer offerings such as Ballet Stars: A Ballet Workshop, All That Jazz! A Summer Dance Sampler, Tutus and Twirls! A Summer Dance Sampler, and Petite Pirouettes: A Summer Dance Sampler.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes and workshops run in summer sessions between July 7 and August 15, with additional sessions offered in fall and winter/spring
The Community Dance Program is offered through the Office of Community and Professional Education (CAPE) at Northeastern Illinois University. The program follows a dance and body movement curriculum designed with the beginning and intermediate student in mind, and the various courses are age-appropriate and open to participants from the community-at-large. Courses with fewer than six students enrolled may be canceled.
For Pre-Ballet and Basic Ballet, students wear a solid-colored leotard with tights and ballet shoes, with hair in a bun or pulled off the face. For Jazz Dance and Musical Theater Dance, students wear a preferably solid-colored leotard with tights and black shorts or jazz pants, along with jazz shoes or jazz sneakers, with hair off the face. For Hip Hop, students wear a T-shirt or leotard with shorts or jazz pants and jazz sneakers or non-street sneakers, with hair secured back from the face. No jewelry such as necklaces and bracelets is permitted, food, gum, and drinks other than water are not allowed in the studio, and cell phone or electronic device use during class is not allowed.
