Sway Dance Chicago was established in 2010 by founder Teresa Swanson. Teresa’s choreography has been chosen twice to represent Iowa State University at the National College Dance Festival, and she received the Dance Magazine Award for Best Student Choreographer for her piece Siren, performed at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The leadership team includes founder Teresa Swanson and an admin manager named Maggie.
Instructors at Sway Dance Chicago include Sophia, Aynsley, Alejandro, Teresa, and Alex, whose backgrounds include performance in show dance routines, competitive dance team leadership, long-term membership in a folkloric dance company, choreography presented at national festivals, and training and teaching in styles such as ballet, jazz, tap, modern, salsa, bachata, ballroom, swing, and hip hop. The studio describes its mission as providing casual but quality instruction to keep sessions relaxed, fun, and productive, with a goal of helping students bring the love of movement into their lives in ways that work for their learning style and to give students an opportunity to let go of their hectic lives for a few hours and fall in love with dancing.
Sway Dance Chicago is described as a local, woman-owned business and a dance community for everyone, and it offers gift certificates for private lessons and group classes. The studio notes that it has three private rooms available for events such as parties, showers, rehearsals, and weddings, and it offers space rental for events. One testimonial states that “Sway provides a relaxed and friendly learning environment free of stress and pretension of many traditional studios.”
Students are asked to bring comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement, clean shoes that stay attached to the foot (no flip flops), a water bottle, and a positive attitude ready to learn and have fun.
