The Naperville Art League is a not-for-profit, volunteer organization sponsored by membership that offers hands-on art classes throughout the year for adults and children. It hosts monthly themed art shows featuring original artwork created by members, with all pieces for sale, and each show focuses on current local events, stylistic artistic elements, and fine art traditions. The organization was founded in 1961 under the leadership of Hayman Herndon and has since supported local emerging and established artists, expanded its building in 1996, and commissioned the 15-foot-high red Riverwalk sculpture “Landforms” in 1984. It founded the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair in 1985, an outdoor art fair held on the third weekend of every September that has earned a reputation as one of the top outdoor art fairs in the country. The Naperville Art League also supports the Century Walk public art project and became part of it in 2009 with the World’s Greatest Artist mural. The organization states that it does not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, age, disability, religion, gender, or sexual orientation and notes that members are encouraged to support at least one activity per year. The mission of the Naperville Fine Art Center & Gallery/Naperville Art League is to support and sustain the development and diversity of all forms of art through art instruction, programs, workshops, and exhibits, and to provide art education while raising awareness and appreciation of the arts for the cultural enhancement of the community.
