About
theCoderSchool North Shore – Camps and Code Coaching offers projects with Raspberry Pi, Roblox game creation and publishing, AI and ChatGPT, AI image recognition bots, and coding algorithms that mimic computer intelligence. Campers can work with Python and PyGame, use an Arduino microcontroller to connect and program LEDs and sensors, do Minecraft coding, and explore robotics using mBots or similar robots, including building robots. The program also includes game development using Scratch or Snap.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Weekly camps with half-day morning or afternoon sessions, with options to mix and match sessions throughout the week
• Price: $425 $375 (Code "EARLY50" at checkout) for listed camps.
Camps run in two sessions each day, with a Morning Session from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and an Afternoon Session from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Weekly camp examples include sessions such as 6/15–6/19, 6/22–6/26, 6/29–7/3, 7/6–7/10, and 7/13–7/17.
The program’s flagship after-school offering is called Code Coaching, which is an after-school drop-off and virtual program for kids learning to code. Expert coders teach students in a super-small two to one ratio, and Code Coaches personalize projects built to suit each student. Entry-level classes are offered in a larger ratio, along with @school classes and coding camps.
theCoderSchool is headquartered and was founded in Silicon Valley in 2014 and describes itself as Silicon Valley's #1 kids coding program. It is part of a nationwide system of over 65 locations around the country, teaching over 7,000 students every week with the brainpower of 1000+ expert Code Coaches, and notes that it is the largest in Silicon Valley with more locations on the way around the country. The program describes its spaces as cool startup-vibe locations and emphasizes a mentor relationship with experienced coders, called Code Coaches.
The stated mission of theCoderSchool is to do more than just teach coding, aiming for aspiring coders to use their passion as a stepping stone to thinking outside the box, to channel their ideas in a creative way, and to have fun.
As a longtime partner of the Congressional App Challenge (CAC), theCoderSchool helps encourage innovation through coding across the country and collaborates with the Congressional App Challenge to run a national recognition program for top applications.
For robotics activities, students are welcome to purchase the robot on their own using a link provided by the program so they can take it home after, or they can use robots supplied by the program that are taken back after camp.
Testimonials from parents include comments that the program created a customized curriculum for a child whose parent has been in IT for 23 years, that instructors are described as exceptional in online classes, that an online spring break camp led to a child creating games between sessions, and that kids were very excited about a Scratch camp and planned to return later in the summer.
