About

Summer Camps at Wheel Art Pottery Studio include a Summer Clay and Art Camp and Clay Camps in the Warehouse District where campers make pottery using both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Camp days include playing games, hanging out and fellowshipping with other campers, taking hikes through the Peoria Warehouse District, and learning about the relevance of warehouse district buildings to Peoria's history. Campers learn some science about what clay is, where it comes from, how it becomes a finished ceramic object, what it means for a pot to be truly functional, and they create both functional pottery forms and sculptural ceramic wares, along with projects in other media provided by Art with Kyla.

• Ages: 6–17 years old

Students create 1–2 keepable clay pieces each camp day that stay at the studio for finishing, glazing, and firing and are picked up at a later date, and functional forms created are food-safe, dishwasher-safe, and microwave safe. Campers need to bring a lunch every day except for the last day, when there is a pizza party. The clay and pottery instruction is led by Master Potter Jacob Grant, who has over 25 years of experience in clay and over 20 years of experience teaching art to people of all ages and walks of life, and he co-teaches the camp with instructor Kyla Cadwell, who has over 15 years of experience in art education and studied art at Illinois Central College and Bradley University. Jacob and Kyla share a teaching philosophy that creativity is best learned through independent experimentation and trial and error, with the belief that humans learn best when they have agency over their unique creative path, and Jacob believes the experience of creating art is more important than the finished product, so students are encouraged to come without worry of being able to make pots on their own and instead to come with desire to play and have fun. Summer camps have been held at Wheel Art Pottery Studio for 13 years, and Jacob Grant, the owner of Wheel Art Pottery Studio, has sold his work across the United States since 2000.
