YMCA of Springfield Gymnastics offers recreational and competitive gymnastics, including parent-child and toddler classes, beginner through advanced gymnastics, tumbling, and rings and swings. The program includes specific classes such as LITTLE BUGS (Tiny Tumbler Parent Child), MINI BEES (parent-child transition class), TODDLER BEES, KINDER BEGINNER, SCHOOL AGE BEGINNER, ADVANCED BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED, TUMBLING 1, TUMBLING 2, TUMBLING 3, and RINGS AND SWINGS. The program also offers Gymnastics Camps where campers tumble and flip in the gymnastics center.
• Ages: Walking–18 years old
• Schedule: Recreational gymnastics runs year-round by season, with classes in the evenings and on weekends; gymnastics camp runs 9am–4pm with childcare available 7am–9am and 4pm–6pm
Recreational gymnastics is open to girls and boys starting at walking age, and boys and girls ages walking and up and all ability levels are welcome to participate in gymnastics. Recreational activities include parent-child, toddler, beginner, intermediate, advanced, tumbling, and rings and swings, and recreational gymnastics focuses on developing youth skills, strength, and flexibility in a fun and structured environment. The Springfield Y has a competitive activity for girls, athletes are required to try out for the team, and the YMCA Gymnastics Team competes USAG levels 3–10 and all Xcel Levels at meets in and around central Illinois.
LITTLE BUGS is a Tiny Tumbler Parent Child class for ages walking–2.5, and MINI BEES is a parent-child transition class for ages 2.5–3.5. TODDLER BEES is the first preschool class that is instructor-led and requires the child to participate without their adult. KINDER BEGINNER is a beginner class for 5-year-olds that serves as a transition from Pre-K classes to school-age classes.
TUMBLING 1 is a beginner class for those with little or no experience focusing on introductory and progressive tumbling. TUMBLING 2 requires completion of Tumbling 1 or approval by the gymnastics director and works on front limbers, walkovers, and handsprings. TUMBLING 3 requires completion of Tumbling 2 or approval by the gymnastics director and works on handsprings, connections, series, and tucks. RINGS AND SWINGS is an all-boys class that introduces boys to beginner gymnastics, tumbling skills, and the high bar and rings and must be director approved.
Rec gymnastics classes are led by USA Gymnastics certified coaches. The gymnastics director can be reached at [email protected]. The YMCA of Springfield has been serving the community for 150 years. The mission of the YMCA Gymnastics Team is to foster an environment allowing young athletes to become superior gymnasts, to contribute to team camaraderie and sportsmanship, and build lifelong skills consistent with the Y’s mission and cause. The organization partners with community groups to raise awareness and address issues of childcare, senior services, food insecurity, support for foster children, educational gaps, and healthy activities in underserved communities.
