About

Hoosier Courts Nursery School offers daily activities where children can paint a picture, build with blocks, tend the garden, and learn about the insects they find. Children also spend time riding tricycles, climbing, and playing tag. Each of the three classrooms has a playground located just outside the door, and the outdoors is described as an extension of the classroom, allowing children to move between indoor and outdoor spaces throughout most of the day.

• Ages: 1–5 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Hoosier Courts Nursery School includes a Toddler/Twos classroom opening in August 2026 for children 12 months (and walking) to 3 years old, with a group size of up to 10 and a staff-to-child ratio of 1:5. Preschool classrooms serve children approximately 3–5 years old, with a group size of up to 20 and a staff-to-child ratio of 1:10, and use multi-age groupings so children stay in the same classroom with their teachers from age 3 until they leave for kindergarten. Preschool classrooms include open-ended materials that are rotated to reflect children’s current interests and encourage curiosity, creativity, communication, and teamwork in a play-based environment.

The stated goal of Hoosier Courts Nursery School is to provide an environment that supports and nurtures development in cognitive, emotional, language, physical, self-help, and social skills. The centers that include Hoosier Courts are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and have achieved Level 4 in Paths to QUALITY. The program is part of a system that advocates for expansion and increased support for childcare services on the IU Bloomington campus, oversees and coordinates all childcare services on that campus, and serves as a single point of entry for university employees and students seeking childcare information and services there. One parent, Sadie C., described the staff as “conscientious and loving with the children, very accommodating to a variety of parent requests,” and noted that the director “is very thoughtful and keeps parents informed about everything from parking and weather to road construction in the area.”
