About

The sports program includes hearing from filmmakers, attending film screenings, and creating their own short films. It also teaches the basics of game design, including both 2D design and 3D design, through hands-on workshops. Students can take part in documentary filmmaking and learn basic reporting techniques as part of the program’s activities.

• Schedule: 2026 program dates include July 6–10 for High School Journalism Institute Session I, July 12–16 for High School Journalism Institute Session II, and various weeks in June and July for Cinema Academy and Game Development Camp. Students spend the week on campus for Cinema Academy.

The program is part of The Media School, which was established in 2014, while the High School Journalism Institute was established in 1946, and the journalism program is 100 years old. The telecommunications and film studies departments are more than half a century old. The Media School’s leadership team includes Dean David Tolchinsky, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs Andrew Weaver, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs Galen Clavio, Director of Student Recruitment Matt Gillam, and Director of Communication and Marketing Audrie Osterman. The Media School’s mission states that it combines a liberal arts education with hands-on, professional training to propel students into the world as leaders in the media industry, and its three-fold curriculum emphasizes thinking about, managing, and creating media. Core values include creation of content that is grounded in good writing, is ethical, represents diverse voices, amplifies and normalizes conversations about mental health, and protects and disseminates fact-based truth.

Cinema Academy is described as providing in-depth experiential learning opportunities for student filmmakers of all calibers and interests. Game Development Camp uses the same tools that professional companies and studios use to create their work, and students are encouraged to sign up for either 2D or 3D design or both. The High School Journalism Institute gives high school students and teachers an immersive learning experience through a variety of workshops and educational opportunities. Programs are for middle and high school students across the country. Scholarships are available for Cinema Academy, Game Development Camp, and the High School Journalism Institute.

The Media School reports that 10 Media School students have won IASB awards, and $346,100 in scholarships have been awarded to 126 Media School students. The Media School also notes community involvement through strengthening an international research partnership in Berlin in collaboration with Freie Universität Berlin and the Weizenbaum Institute.
