About

The Language Based Preschool Program includes play with a variety of play materials, art activities, and story books as part of the daily classroom experience. Any topic in the classroom can be extended through these play materials, art activities, and story books for consistency and planned redundancy across a day's activities.

• Ages: 3–5 years old
• Schedule: Two groups meet on either Monday and Wednesday morning or Monday and Wednesday afternoon in year-round sessions that coincide with the fall, spring, and summer semesters at Indiana University

The program is a special program for preschool-aged children designed to enhance their language learning, including children who are typically developing, children learning English as a second language, and children who exhibit communication delays. The curriculum is designed to be appropriate for 3 to 5 year old children and follows developmentally appropriate practices for cognitive, social, and motor skill development. The preschool curriculum is rooted in content themes and children’s interests.

Enrollment in each group is typically limited to a maximum of 10 children. In each group, the number of children with communication delays is limited to 6, and the other 4 children have typically developing language and social skills and are native English speakers or English language learners.

Experienced preschool teachers and certified speech-language pathologists establish the curriculum and supervise the program. Three graduate clinicians in speech-language pathology are assigned to each of the two groups. A certified speech-language pathologist serves as the clinical supervisor for each group and collaborates with both the classroom teacher and the graduate clinicians.

The program focuses on the development of language skills as a key to learning and views all children as candidates for language enhancement. It is based on the belief that children are active learners who construct language from their experiences in a language-rich classroom environment. Language teaching in the program focuses on the interests of individual children during natural interactions in the classroom setting, and the program uses an integrated approach in which cognitive, social-emotional, motor, and other learning occurs throughout the day in the context of meaningful activities.

The department that houses this program is highly regarded for its research profile and consistently places in the top 20 of its kind nationally among various evaluations. The program brings campus and community together by offering students a place to use the skills they have learned in the classroom. Evaluation and treatment is available to people of all ages throughout south-central Indiana.
