About

Nature Explorers Club offers activities such as playing in creeks, hiking, camping, biking, gardening, cooking, making recipes, reading books, and outdoor adventure. Children and families spend time learning about nature, exploring parks, playgrounds, trails, and gardens, and making friends with trees, flowers, and birds. The program also includes unstructured, child-led outdoor play, homeschooling support, and outdoor education classes, along with a Nature Babies group and mixed-ages classes.

• Ages: 0–10 years old
• Schedule: Class options on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, Monday mornings and evenings, and Friday mornings

Nature Explorers Club has one stated mission: to connect, inspire, and empower families with knowledge and appreciation of their natural world. The leadership team includes Breanna and Maranda as class leaders in Columbus, Andrea as the Columbus leader for Nature Babies, Bre as a class leader in Greenwood, Martinsville, and Trafalgar, Angela as the Carmel class leader, Laura as the Zionsville class leader, Whitley as the Brown County class leader, Morgan as the Bloomington leader, and Audrey and Courtney as Indianapolis leaders. Breanna has a background in education; Maranda was an elementary school teacher at a school in Indianapolis, earned a degree in environmental science/ecology, and led environmental education programs for people of all ages at a national wildlife refuge; Andrea has participated in and led other outdoor education classes; Whitley’s background is in early childhood education; Laura studied environmental science as an undergraduate and environmental engineering in graduate school, is working toward becoming a certified Indiana Master Naturalist, and has been involved with the Indiana Native Plant Society over the past decade. The program’s community involvement includes starting a local chapter of Free Forest School, which promotes unstructured, child-led outdoor play through regular meetups, participation in the Indiana Native Plant Society, and Women in Engineering volunteer programs for elementary students. Nature Explorers Club is not a drop-and-go class, and parents are encouraged to engage as well, and it uses a private Facebook group structure where joining requires speaking with Breanna first.

Parent feedback includes comments that Nature Explorers Club has become the highlight of the week for one family, with a child who wants to call grandparents after each class to share what was learned. Another parent describes a class that allows the wonder of nature to inspire all ages, with freedom built into the class and lessons that continue at home. Other parents describe weekly plans that include time with other kids and families, conversations about leaves, worms, puddles, and spider webs, and a balance of structure and exploration that keeps their children engaged while they build friendships and connections with other families.
