• Ages: 5–18 years old
Since 1990, the Asante Children’s Theater (ACT) Academy has been a cornerstone of performing arts excellence, impacting thousands of young lives and serving as the foundation of the Asante Art Institute. Asante is one of the city’s oldest creative incubators and has a dedicated focus on youth while also being an organization that is for everyone. The institute is grounded in African and African American traditions and perspectives, and through this lens develops programs and performances that educate and promote themes that speak to all communities.
Asante Children’s Theater (ACT) Academy is an intensive program offering training in acting, singing, and dance, with an emphasis on using these skills for social change and community engagement. In Prep4Life, youth take part in storytelling, acting, poetry, writing, singing, and physical movement to music. In Prep Upper Class, teens use the fundamentals of storytelling, spoken word, acting, and content creation in a practical and hands-on setting. Through reading, writing, and public speaking, Zora’s Daughters focuses on girls building their confidence so they can speak up for themselves and their community.
A Touch of Glory is a play that chronicles the historic 1955 Crispus Attucks basketball team. Laura Town’s newly rewritten production of A Touch of Glory is scheduled to take center stage at the Athenaeum during the final weekend of March and the first weekend of April 2026. At Asante Art Institute, every program is connected to a mission to strengthen the mental, emotional, and cultural well-being of the youth and families served and to cultivate global citizens through the arts. The organization uses the arts to foster personal and artistic development in youth and adults from all walks of life to connect with each other and grow.
