About

Blade Family Martial Arts Academy offers Karate, Tae Kwon Do, an Okinawan Kobudo (Weapons) Program, a Women Only Self Defense class, Kids Night Out events, and private lessons. In the Okinawan Kobudo Program, students train with six traditional Okinawan weapons: Bo, Sai, Tonfa, Nunchaku, Eiku, and Kama, and learn manipulation, body conditioning, free exercise, theory, and self defense for each weapon. For each weapon in this program, students receive a small weapons patch as certification, and once all six weapons are certified, students can earn a “Kobudo Black belt” or 1st Level kanji Patch (one stripe).

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Weekly classes are offered Monday through Saturday, with Karate and Tae Kwon Do classes available on multiple days and times, a Women Only Self Defense class on Wednesday evenings, and the Okinawan Kobudo (Weapons) Program on Thursday evenings; Kids Night Out is scheduled on Friday, May 15th from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
• Price: Kids Night Out is $25 per child; monthly program options include Tae Kwon Do $85/month, Karate $85/month, Kobudo (Okinawan Weapons) $50/month, Tae Kwon Do + Kobudo $115/month, Karate + Kobudo $115/month, Dual Program (Tae Kwon Do + Karate) $125/month, family rates starting at $240/month, and private lessons at $55 per hour.

The Okinawan Kobudo Program is open to all ranks and styles, and Karate and Tae Kwon Do students can participate because Kobudo is its own independent category. Requirements for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Level kanji patches include review of certification requirements for all six weapons, performance of the Trias Taichi Tu Kobudo Kata with all six weapons, and performance and review of traditional weapons katas from a set list. Katas taught in this program include Bo katas such as Tsue Sho No Kun and Shihan No Bo, Sai katas such as Tawada No Sai Dai, Nunchaku kata Nagamine No Nunchaku, Tonfa katas such as Matsuhiga No Tonfa, Eiku kata Tsuken Asato No Eiku De, and Kama katas such as Tozan Toyama No Kama.

Sensei Courtland Blade holds a 4th Degree Black Belt in Shorei Goju Ryu and 3rd Level in Okinawan Kobudo, and Instructor Angel Blade holds a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Shorei Goju Ryu and 2nd Level in Okinawan Kobudo. Hanshi Kincaid leads the weapons class every 2nd Thursday from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The academy states its mission as “Self-confidence, fitness and focus through Martial Arts training!” and notes involvement in the CFI 27 Karate Program. Annual memberships are available, and attendance is limited to two classes per week per style, with an exception for students who are Orange belt or higher.
