About
Dyslexia Institute of Indiana Tutoring offers 1:1 Orton-Gillingham tutoring, both online and in person, for students who are struggling with reading and spelling. The program also provides diagnostic, multisensory, and direct instruction in phonics using the Orton-Gillingham approach, as well as comprehensive evaluations to test for dyslexia. In addition to tutoring, it offers training for every level and a school-based ReadySetREAD program that uses the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading and writing in small groups during the school day.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: 5 week summer (full) day camp sessions
The program includes Camp Delafield, a summer day camp with academic mornings that feature daily 1:1 Orton-Gillingham tutoring and play-filled activities each afternoon. Camp Delafield is described as a 5 week summer (full) day camp focused on reaching the “whole child” through academics and activities that build and encourage motivation, self-esteem, and social skills, and is designed for students ages 7–12. Dyslexia Institute of Indiana also provides a college prep evaluation for students age 16 and older, and testing is administered by a certified school psychologist, including a one-hour parent consultation with a Dii dyslexia specialist and a 90-minute post-testing conference with the psychologist.
Dyslexia Institute of Indiana serves students, parents, adults, and educators who are impacted by dyslexia and other language learning difficulties through several primary programs using the Orton-Gillingham approach. The organization reports that tutors work tirelessly to help children and adults learn to read and help students build reading and writing skills, grow their confidence, and reach their full potential. Dii has been helping children with dyslexia and other learning differences improve literacy skills since 1989, was incorporated in 1989, and held Camp Delafield for the first time in 1990. Over the years, Dii has launched Wells Outreach Tutoring Services to provide year-round outreach tutoring, created A Reading Place for Adults, and started the ReadySetREAD program in schools with support from the Nina Mason Pulliam Trust. By its 25th year in 2014, Camp Delafield had served over 1,000 students, Wells Outreach Tutoring Services had impacted 2,474 people, educator training had reached nearly 2,500 individuals, and ReadySetREAD had reached nearly 1,290 students. Dii reports having served more than 5,000 students over 36 years, raising millions of dollars for its programs, and having 82 staff members across all Indiana counties.
The mission of the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana states that, believing all people are entitled to fulfill their potential, the organization exists to serve children, adolescents, and adults with specific learning disabilities. The leadership team includes CEO Deniese Hofmeister. Dii notes that the Nina Mason Pulliam Trust provided a major grant that enabled the launch of the ReadySetREAD program in schools and that community members serve on its board to support its mission.
