The Excellence, Discovery, and Growth through Education (EDGE) program offers an environment for academic enrichment, social-emotional development, positive peer and adult relationships, and exploration and exposure to new skills, ideas, and activities designed to support healthy youth development. This out-of-school time program is described as a safe and engaging place for youth in kindergarten through 12th grade to participate in afterschool and summer day camp activities. EDGE Summer Camps are described as an academically based, engaging learning opportunity for youth during the summer months, and the camp fee covers daily breakfast, lunch, and snack, a camp shirt, weekly field trips, an overnight camp trip, and weekly swimming. Families drop off and pick up all campers at the designated camp location.
Qualified staff members and volunteers work with youth individually and in small groups to provide homework assistance and individual guidance. The PACT Counselor role requires at least completion of 9th grade and current high school enrollment or 2024 high school graduation. Lead Counselors and the Assistant Director must each have at least one year of post-secondary work or school experience, and candidates for these roles must be vaccinated against COVID-19. The Director of Youth Services is Tim Nowak, and the program offers several opportunities for youth in high school and young adults to learn and hone their leadership skills in a fun and engaging atmosphere.
John Boner Neighborhood Centers began in 1971 when a group of neighbors on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis determined the need for a neighborhood service center, and in 1994 the Near Eastside Multi-Service Center was renamed as the John Boner Neighborhood Centers. The mission of John Boner Neighborhood Centers is to inspire neighbors and partners to improve the quality of life on the Near Eastside by providing tools for change and growth. EDGE programs partner with neighborhood schools to provide after-school programming for Near Eastside youth and participate in the Indiana Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers program.
