About
Indianapolis Children’s Choir – Preschool & Early Childhood Programs offers choral experiences and music education through music classes that focus on a beginning musical foundation. Children take part in musical experiences that include singing, choral singing, and non-auditioned choral experience, with opportunities for performance in concerts such as a holiday concert, as well as touring and recording with a performing choir.
• Ages: 18 months–18 years old
• Schedule: Each week, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir holds 110 rehearsals and music classes.
The Indianapolis Children’s Choir’s mission is to transform lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community. Its Music At Play early childhood program offers children 18 months of age through kindergarten a beginning musical foundation, and the Foundations Choir is for singers in kindergarten to begin their choral journey. The Preparatory Choir program is a non-auditioned choral experience for singers in grades 1 through 3, and the Jubilate Choir is for singers with special needs who are not traditionally able to sing in a choral setting. The organization also offers six performing choirs for singers in grades 4 through 12, ranging from intermediate to advanced treble and mixed ensembles, and presents its own concert season each year.
Founded in 1986 by Henry Leck, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir is under the leadership of Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde. The choir serves more than 2,500 young people between the ages of 18 months and 18 years each year and has performed on every continent except Antarctica. It has produced 15 CDs and two videos commemorating major milestones, with music available on online platforms such as Amazon Music, iTunes, and Spotify, and its Angels Sing holiday concert is broadcast each year by 13 WTHR.
The Indianapolis Children’s Choir has often performed by blind audition for national professional music associations, including five national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. The choir was honored to sing for Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu during his public address at Butler University and performed the national anthem with Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. The choir has recorded extensively, and the Angels Sing holiday concert at Second Presbyterian Church is broadcast annually.
Through its community involvement, the Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir is a cooperative effort of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and offers musical experiences to students in preschool through grade 9, while the Anderson Area Children’s Choir is a division of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and offers musical experiences to students in preschool through grade 12. The Indianapolis Children’s Choir performs in various professional settings and regularly appears with orchestras, professional artists, and ensembles, and its singers have performed at events such as Indiana gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations, The Governor’s Arts Awards, the Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, the Indiana Leadership Summit, the Tenth Pan Am Games, President George W. Bush’s visit to Indiana, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication, Project 9/11 Indianapolis Memorial Dedication Ceremony, the Indianapolis Prize Gala, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis opening and closing ceremonies, and many major sporting events.
Testimonials describe the choir as organized and a strong partner for events, with comments noting powerful performances and positive responses from audiences at events such as the Eskenazi Celebration event, the NALM Conference, and programs with organizations like the Little Wish Foundation. Singers and colleagues have also shared personal reflections, including one singer who said, “ICC grabbed mine!” and another who said, “It is a place that I know I won’t be judged.”
