About

Music At Play introduces young children to a beginning musical foundation through music classes that include singing and choral experiences. The program is part of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, which offers rehearsals, music education, and choral music performance, including participation in a performing choir. As children grow within the organization, they may take part in holiday concerts, national anthem performances, and tours that include national and international travel.

• Ages: 18 months–18 years old

Founded in 1986 by Henry Leck, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir is under the leadership of Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde. Its mission is to transform lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community. Each year, the organization serves more than 2,500 young people from nearly 20 counties, more than 360 schools, and 56 school districts, and holds 110 rehearsals and music classes each week. The Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs offers children not traditionally able to sing in a choral setting a unique opportunity to explore their musical talents, and six performing choirs include singers from grades 4 through 12 in intermediate to advanced treble and mixed ensembles.

The Indianapolis Children’s Choir has performed in various professional settings, including gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations, The Governor’s Arts Awards, the Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, the Indiana Leadership Summit, the Tenth Pan Am Games, President George W. Bush’s visit to Indiana, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication, Project 9/11 Indianapolis Memorial Dedication Ceremony, the Indianapolis Prize Gala, opening and closing ceremonies of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and many major sporting events. The choir has performed by blind audition for national professional music associations, including five national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. The ICC has produced 15 CDs, including collaborations with the Canadian Brass and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and its music is available on platforms such as Amazon Music, iTunes, and Spotify. It has performed on every continent except Antarctica and performed the national anthem with Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson at Super Bowl XLVI, and it presented Indianapolis’ first professional children’s opera, The Trio of Minuet, at Clowes Memorial Hall.

The Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir is a cooperative effort of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the ICC and offers musical experiences to students in preschool through grade 9, and the Anderson Area Children’s Choir is a division of the ICC and offers musical experiences to students in preschool through grade 12. The Angels Sing holiday concert is broadcast each year by 13 WTHR. Testimonials from community partners and audience members describe the choir as organized and professional, note many compliments from event attendees, and highlight the impact of founder Henry Leck and the experience of ICC singers.
