Special Olympics Indiana, founded in 1969, is part of the global Special Olympics movement and is created by the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation for the Benefit of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. Its mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, with ongoing participation alongside their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. Special Olympics Indiana reports more than 20,000 athletes and Unified partners, supported by thousands of coaches and volunteers, and relies entirely on donations. The organization is structured into 10 Areas led by volunteers that support County Programs and host regional competitions, and it provides year-round sports training and competition in over 20 sports.
Special Olympics Indiana hosts a variety of state-level competitions throughout the year, including Summer Games, Basketball Tournaments, Fall Games, Bowling Tournaments, and Winter Games, and it participates in U.S. and World Games. Summer Games is its largest annual competition and brings together more than 3,500 athletes, Unified partners, and volunteers for a weekend event, and also brings together more than 2,400 athletes and Unified partners from across the state on the campuses of Indiana State and Rose-Hulman for three days. Officers and athletes rally together to support The Summer Games and raise funds for Special Olympics Indiana. The organization also offers special events such as the Polar Plunge, Plane Pull Challenge, Law Enforcement Torch Run, Champions Golf Classic (also called Champions Golf Classic / Annual Golf Classic), Breakfast With Champions, and a State Conference.
Special Olympics Indiana offers volunteer roles including becoming a volunteer, becoming a coach, and event day roles such as referee, scorekeeper, announcer, or awards presenter. It provides coaching resources as a dedicated space with tools and growth opportunities for coaches, and it offers a way to become an athlete by filling out an Athlete Interest Form. Unified Sports® is based on the idea that playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding, and Special Olympics has launched the Play Unified campaign, a multi-faceted marketing campaign targeting young people age 14 to 25 throughout the world. Special Olympics Indiana’s stated goal is for all persons with intellectual disabilities to have the chance to become useful and productive citizens who are accepted and respected in their communities, and it promotes an inclusive world for all, driven by the power of sport, where people with intellectual disabilities live active, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
