Special Olympics Indiana was founded in 1969. It is a nonprofit that is part of the global Special Olympics movement. The mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, offering them continuing participation in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. Special Olympics Indiana uses sport, health, education, and leadership programs to end discrimination against and empower people with intellectual disabilities. The organization relies entirely on donations.
Special Olympics Indiana energizes athletes by organizing 10 Areas, each led by volunteers who support County Programs and host regional competitions. Athletes compete in various meets to earn their place in state-level championships, and Special Olympics Indiana hosts a variety of state-level competitions year round and participates in a different national or global competition each year. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team and was inspired by the principle that playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. The Play Unified campaign targets young people age 14 to 25 throughout the world. The goal of Special Olympics Indiana is for all persons with intellectual disabilities to have the chance to become useful and productive citizens who are accepted and respected in their communities, and its vision is an inclusive world for all, driven by the power of sport, through which people with intellectual disabilities live active, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Special Olympics Indiana engages and energizes athletes and volunteers throughout Indiana, and officers and athletes rally together to support the Summer Games and raise funds for Special Olympics Indiana, including through the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
