Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers offers year-round, education-based preschool with engaging lessons, literature-based STEAM activities, Literacy Programs, and hands-on enrichment activities. The program also offers pre-K through 5th grade before- and after-school care, all-day summer camps with themed summer camps, and educational field trips.

Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers is a local non-profit dedicated to nurturing children and their families by providing quality, educationally-based, and financially accessible childcare in a safe, diverse, and enriching environment. The organization offers year-round childcare for children ages 2–12, including preschool, before- and after-school care, and all-day summer camps, and provides a tuition assistance program. Children learn through play with literature-based STEAM activities and Literacy Programs, and the program includes innovative STEAM activities that promote critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork, and encourage a lifelong love of learning. The program also offers all-day summer camps with fun and educational activities planned for each week.

All Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers sites are licensed and accredited through the Maryland State Department of Education’s Office of Child Care and have been awarded an EXCELS (Excellence Counts in Early Learning and School Age Care) Check Level 5 rating, which is reserved for the highest quality childcare providers in the State of Maryland. Critchlow Adkins has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. The organization has an equity statement committing to a nurturing, diverse, and inclusive environment where all staff, students, and families feel empowered, valued, respected, and safe.

The leadership team includes Cristy Morrell, Executive Director; Alix Lovell, Finance Director; Liz Connelly, Development Director; Amy Michels, Program and Outreach Specialist; Kissaundra Thomas, Office Administrator; Melissa Johnson, Cordova Site Director; Donna Austin, Preschool Site Director; Keieve Colbert, School Age Site Director; Marlene Thomas, St. Michaels Site Director; and Annetta Biscoe, White Marsh Site Director. Four Critchlow sites are located within Talbot County elementary schools, and the Cordova Site is located within Chapel District Elementary School with one all-day preschool classroom and two school age classrooms for before- and after-school care and summer camp programming, a Site Director’s office, and a teacher work space, with spaces described as light and bright and full of engaging learning stations. The Cordova Site expansion provides a brand new, larger childcare center within Chapel District Elementary School, and the new Cordova center allows childcare for up to 30 additional school age students.

Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers receives support from the Talbot County Council through ARPA Grant Funding, Mid-Shore Community Foundation Donor Advised Funds (The Arthur H. Kudner Jr. Fund, The Reynolds/Cristiano Fund, The Fryling Fund, The Ferree Fund), the Critchlow Adkins Board of Directors, and private donors and foundations. Families describe Critchlow Adkins as having a team that genuinely cares about each child and fostering a sense of trust, with teachers who continue to show children love and support their creative and emotional development even after they leave their classrooms. Parents describe the staff and volunteers as wonderfully dedicated and call the program a valuable community resource. One parent notes that summer camp had fun and educational activities planned for each week that kept their child learning and exploring during the break from school, and that their child came home eager and excited to share the adventures experienced with new friends. Other parents say every day is filled with engaging activities and creative learning experiences, that they can trust the care of their children in the nurturing environment, and that their children have grown, learned, and participated in many things while attending Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers.
