Children take part in literature-based STEAM activities, Literacy Programs, themed summer camps, educational field trips, and hands-on enrichment activities.

• Ages: 2–12 years old
• Schedule: Open year-round with weekday care options, Monday through Friday

Critchlow Adkins is open year-round, Monday through Friday between 6:45 am and 5:30 pm, with sites available during those same hours and Central Office staff available weekdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The program describes children learning through play with literature-based STEAM activities and Literacy Programs, and notes that its STEAM activities promote critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and a lifelong love of learning. It offers a tuition assistance program and states that it is educationally based and financially accessible.

Critchlow Adkins is a local non-profit dedicated to nurturing children and their families by providing quality, educationally based, and financially accessible childcare in a safe, diverse, and enriching environment. All of its sites are licensed and accredited through the Maryland State Department of Education’s Office of Child Care and have been awarded an EXCELS (Excellence Counts in Early Learning and School Age Care) Check Level 5 rating, and the organization has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. The organization has an Equity Statement that commits to a nurturing, diverse, and inclusive environment where all staff, students, and families feel empowered, valued, respected, and safe.

The leadership team includes Cristy Morrell, Executive Director; Alix Lovell, Finance Director; Liz Connelly, Development Director; Amy Michels, Program and Outreach Specialist; Kissaundra Thomas, Office Administrator; Melissa Johnson, Cordova Site Director; Donna Austin, Preschool Site Director; Keieve Colbert, School Age Site Director; Marlene Thomas, St. Michaels Site Director; and Annetta Biscoe, White Marsh Site Director. Four Critchlow sites are located within Talbot County elementary schools, and the Cordova Site childcare center was built as part of the Chapel District Elementary School renovation and expansion, allowing childcare for up to 30 additional school age students. The Cordova Site includes one all-day preschool classroom, two school age classrooms for before- and after-school care and summer camp programming, a Site Director’s office, and a teacher work space, and the spaces are described as light and bright and full of engaging learning stations.

Critchlow Adkins is described as a valuable community resource with wonderfully dedicated staff and volunteers, and several parents describe the staff as caring for children as if they were their own. Parent testimonials describe every day as filled with engaging activities and creative learning experiences, and note that even teachers who no longer have a child in their classroom continue to show love and support for creative and emotional development. One parent describes summer camp as having fun and educational activities planned each week that kept their child learning and exploring during the break from school, and another notes that their child came home eager and excited to share the adventures experienced with new friends. Parents also describe trusting the care provided and feeling grateful to be part of the Critchlow community.

The Cordova expansion received support from the Talbot County Council through ARPA Grant Funding, Mid-Shore Community Foundation Donor Advised Funds (The Arthur H. Kudner Jr. Fund, The Reynolds/Cristiano Fund, The Fryling Fund, The Ferree Fund), the Critchlow Adkins Board of Directors, and private donors and foundations.
