Lutherville Music School
Lutherville Music School, 1313 York Rd, Lutherville, MD 21093
About
Lutherville Music School offers private music and voice lessons, a band program with weekly coached rehearsals, and Rock Band Camps where beginners and experienced players can perform, record, and jam. Students can take lessons on guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano, keyboard, flute, saxophone, clarinet, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, voice, and strings including cello, viola, violin, and upright bass. The program includes summer camps, ROCK STAR JAM events, recording opportunities, band photo shoots, and fun, free live performances throughout the year, including live, full-of-energy shows at the BC Brewery and outdoor shows on school grounds.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Open seven days a week, offering a wide range of practice and lesson times
Lutherville Music School describes its mission as creating customized experiences for each unique learner while having fun doing it. The school offers a free trial lesson and runs month-to-month lessons with no semester minimums and no long-term contract required. Rock Band Camps are open to beginners and all levels, and students in bands select their own songs and make their own musical decisions in a pressure-free environment that focuses on the process, not the product.
The space has been recently renovated with a brand new stage, a revamped recording studio, modern practice rooms, and a more robust recording system. The school features a wall of fame for student bands that have been together for three or more years, creative album-cover style band photo shoots each season, and a display of band photographs up the stairs. There is also an active student council, annual awards for students who exhibit dedication and/or improvement, and a student-of-the-month column in the newsletter.
Teachers at Lutherville Music School have professional music experience, and most are actively involved in the Baltimore music scene. The school has been operating since 2011 and reports having served close to 2,000 students over the past 13 years, with a record of excellence since 2011. In 2024, it was recognized by The Baltimore Sun’s Reader's Choice Award for Best Music Lessons and by Macaroni Kid for “the most loved music lessons.”
Community involvement includes live shows at the BC Brewery after spring and winter band sessions, an outdoor show on school grounds after the summer session, fun community events, showcases, and special events throughout the year, including virtual performances during the pandemic. One testimonial from a student, Reed Spaulding, describes support in learning various instruments, forming a band, playing gigs, writing and recording original music, and organizing the Tributary Festival. Parent testimonials from Jenna Zava and Fiona Robinson describe instructors as professional, knowledgeable, warm, and creative in their teaching approaches, and note that the program brings together students with different styles to make music. Another testimonial from Carol Adams, a 70-year-old student, credits instruction and encouragement at Lutherville Music School with helping her play drums and piano and participate in a band, and recommends the school to others who share an interest in music. A family testimonial from Gio Brion states that Lutherville Music School has offered chances for the entire family to perform during showcases and special events throughout the year, including virtual events during the pandemic.
