About
Camp Dreamcatcher Therapeutic and Educational Camp offers a Therapeutic and Educational Camp Session that served 110 HIV/AIDS-impacted youth in 2024. The program created a therapeutic community for children and included campers who later moved into counselor roles.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Schedule: The Therapeutic and Educational Camp Session was held August 18th–24th, 2024.
Camp Dreamcatcher provides free therapeutic programs for youth impacted by HIV/AIDS, trauma, and mental health challenges. In 2024, 24 campers moved into the role of counselors. Also in 2024, 85% of the campers were from Philadelphia and the surrounding region, and 200 counselors, medical personnel, professionals, and community members volunteered during the camp week. Camp Dreamcatcher strives to reduce barriers to physical and mental health equity by providing free therapeutic and educational programs throughout the year with the help of volunteers, sponsors, and donors. The camp was founded by Patty Hillkirk.
In 2020, Camp Dreamcatcher went to a virtual format for its camp session. In September 2023, the inaugural Catching Dreams Over the Edge event raised over $71,000 to support Camp Dreamcatcher, and forty-four Camp Dreamcatcher Superheroes rappelled eight stories down the tallest building in Kennett Square during this event.
A 6-year-old camper said, “I had somebody I could talk to and learned that I’m always going to be perfect just the way I am. It’s important to have a place like Camp because it gives you a break from what you do at home and gives you surprises. I feel taken care of. I like that we are different colors.” A 12-year-old camper said, “I receive love at Camp Dreamcatcher. It is easier to talk about feelings at camp because everyone has them. I don’t think people outside of camp understand.” A 7-year-old camper said, “I am the same as my friends at camp because we like to have fun, know someone who is sick with HIV/AIDS. I love the counselors at camp because they help me to play and they give me HOPE I feel so loved and safe at camp.” Another camper stated, “My dad is in jail and I was able to talk about him not being around. I learn that you need to be respectful. Camp Dreamcatcher is a great place because there is no other place like it.”
