Wheaton Park Stables Programs
Wheaton Park Stables, 1101 Glenallan Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20902
About
Wheaton Park Stables Programs offers pony rides, riding lessons, trail rides, summer camp, birthday parties, Girl/Boy Scout activities, and photo shoots. Pony rides take place in the indoor arena and use ponies and sometimes a small horse, and for first-time visitors they do not use tiny ponies for these rides. For pony rides, ponies are led by someone a couple of times around the arena, and ponies do not travel offsite.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Pony rides are offered on Sundays from 1:30–2:30 pm and Thursdays from 11 am–12 pm, riding lessons run in 12-week series, and guided trail rides are on Sundays in spring and fall with limited winter availability and are weather dependent.
• Price: $10 per pony ride with cash or check, $12 per pony ride with Venmo, and $5 per bag for pre-bagged composted manure.
Pony rides are for children 3–7 years old only, and kids must be at least 3 years old, with no 2-year-olds allowed. For pony rides, kids must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes (no crocs or sandals), and helmets are provided by the stables, with bike helmets not used. The program offers horse-related fun and riding for ages 3–18 in summer camp. Groups for pony rides are by advanced reservations only.
Wheaton Park Stables (WPS) is a family-oriented riding stable that specializes in English style balanced-seat equitation with a primary focus on group lessons, summer camps, trail rides, and pony rides. WPS states that they strive to make horses and activities with them accessible to more people. The current owner is Sandy Creecy, who has been operating WPS since January 2008, and WPS has been in existence for close to 60 years.
Wheaton Park Stables partners with its volunteer crew, the Cura Personalis Project (CPP), for ongoing support of its horses, barn and facility, and program. WPS is a privately owned organization leasing property from the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC) as a part of Wheaton Regional Park. The County Commissioners and the Park have acknowledged the role Wheaton Park Stables has played in the community, and the Montgomery County community pleaded with officials to keep the stables from closing.
Composted manure is available free if visitors shovel and haul it away themselves, and truckload composted manure can be loaded by tractor by arrangement. Access to composted manure is on the right side of the barn with the pile at the back corner, and pre-bagged composted manure is at the right side of the barn near the gate. For composted manure, visitors must bring their own shovel and containers and are asked to close gates behind them in both directions. The stables also have orange tabby cats, Oliver and Maisie, for mouse control.
