About

Portland Stage Summer Camps offer theater camps that immerse participants in all aspects of theater, including movement, writing, and improv exercises. Campers take part in physical movement, creativity, and collaboration, and may explore Shakespeare’s plays and characters through voice work, movement, monologues, and scenes. The program also includes experiences with an improv comedy troupe and theatrical design, such as painting an elaborate set, building a costume, and capturing lights onstage, and each week culminates in an open studio performance for friends and family.

• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Schedule: Week-long camps during school breaks, typically running Monday–Friday from 9 am to 3 pm
• Price: Camps cost $300–$375 per week, with financial aid available and a 10% discount for multiple weeks

Camps are taught by professional actors, directors, and artisans, and participants learn the basics of theatrical design from professional designers at Portland Stage. Portland Stage’s leadership team includes Artistic Executive Director Anita Stewart, Technical Director Ted Gallant, and Costume Shop Supervisor Susan Thomas. The organization was founded in 1974 as the Profile Theater after a group of actors came together in 1973, and it moved to its current home in 1982 under the leadership of Barbara Rosoff. Its mission is to invest in art, learning, and connecting diverse communities through theatrical productions and programs that captivate and inspire.

As a member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), Portland Stage is committed to using actors who are members of Actors’ Equity Association and is the only LORT theater in the State of Maine. Over the course of one season, Portland Stage creates over 250 live performances, and its education programs are built with the same rigor as its professional productions. The camp includes the opportunity to participate in a special event for the opening of Fenix Theatre Company’s production of As You Like It in Deering Oaks Park, and Portland Stage notes that it fosters deep community partnerships and collaborates with the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa on the From Away festival. Registration for Summer 2026 will open by early February, and families are asked to register based on the grade their camper will be in for the 2026–2027 school year. Portland Stage reserves the right to cancel a program two weeks before it starts if minimal enrollment is not achieved and may also combine programs, change teachers, or extend participant ages at its discretion.
