About

Ann Arbor YMCA Summer Camps include Camp Birkett, which is described as a summer day camp for all youth ages 5–14. At YMCA Camp AGQ, Rowe Hall is often considered the heart of AGQ and is one of the first buildings that families see when they arrive at camp, and it holds drama classes, rainy day activities, weekly dances, and talent shows.

• Ages: 5–14 years old
• Schedule: Ann Arbor YMCA main facility hours Monday–Friday 5:30 a.m.–9 p.m.; Saturday–Sunday 7 a.m.–6 p.m.

The Ann Arbor YMCA’s mission is to put its core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility into action through facilities and programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, as part of a charitable association of adults and children joined by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of children and teens, promoting healthy living, and supporting neighbors. The first Ann Arbor YMCA was established in 1858 by students at the University of Michigan, and the organization has added and expanded camps and child development programs over time, including Camp Al-Gon-Quian on the shores of Burt Lake and Camp Birkett on Silver Lake in Dexter, as well as child development centers and school-based programs in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Between 2017 and 2021, major construction projects were completed at YMCA Camp AGQ, including a Health Center, rebuilding of Rowe Hall, rebuilding of northside cabins and bathhouse, and completion of the Lodge and kitchen/pantry expansion, and in 2017 the Y completed construction of a director’s cabin and new waterfront shed at YMCA Camp Birkett.

The Ann Arbor YMCA has been involved in community programs such as expanding before and after school programming into Ypsilanti for Ypsilanti Community School students in partnership with Ypsilanti International Elementary School, opening the Ypsilanti Collaborative Child Development Center with Eastern Michigan University, and running Sport Port: Y on the Fly as a supervised, free mobile community physical activity program. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ann Arbor YMCA participated in food distribution across Washtenaw County through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Farmers to Families Food Box program, provided Learning Labs as a safe location for pupils in kindergarten through third grade to participate in virtual learning with childcare, and operated Emergency Childcare at Glacier Hills Child Development Center for first responders and essential employees.
