Community Day Care is a non-profit organization that has been serving families since it was founded in 1972 and has been serving the community for over 50 years. It offers high-quality preschool, summer camp, and before- and after-school programs across Ann Arbor for kids ages 2 to 12, and more than 450 families enroll their children in its programs every year. Community Day Care provides tuition assistance to families with low incomes and prioritizes enrollment of families who have historically been excluded from access to high quality child care programs, including families of color, families with low incomes, and single-caregiver families. Since 2015, it has given over $1.2 million to the community for Community Day Care family support.
Community Day Care hires qualified educators who are trained in early education and development, and it is a choice-based, NAEYC accredited preschool. The leadership team includes Laura (she/her), Executive Director; Mary Anna (she/her), Development Director; Sandra (she/her), Director of Curriculum and Training; Jessi (she/her), Office Manager/Bookkeeper; Andre (he/his), DEI Coordinator; and Michelle (she/her), Director of School Age Programs. The program uses a play-based approach that includes exploration and creativity and maintains small class sizes and personalized attention, as described in parent testimonials.
The mission of Community Day Care is to provide high-quality childcare and early childhood education, strengthen the community by empowering educators, and support family access to equitable, child centered care. The organization states that every child deserves a strong start in life and that it is dedicated to creating inclusive environments where everyone in the community knows they are valued and can thrive. Community Day Care actively engages with local organizations, parents, and caregivers through a collaborative approach to create safe, supportive spaces where kids can play, explore, learn, and grow.
One preschool and camp parent, Amy Koehs, describes the programs as filled with educators who put children and families first and notes that her daughter’s needs were met with compassionate care, with relationships with teachers that were very special to their family. She highlights lots of open-choice play, outside time, and fun activities, and says that at pick-up her child often asked to stay longer. Another preschool parent, Nieri, shares that her son is starting his third and final year of preschool at Community Day Care and describes him as a curious, active-minded, and inquisitive person under the nurturing of the teachers there, and expresses gratitude for the small class sizes, personalized attention, and the sense of a community of engaged and caring teachers, staff, and families.
