About

Nature Learning Community Youth Programs offers exploration of nature through activities such as storytelling, playing games, doing crafts, and experiencing camp life. Participants learn about safety in wild spaces, study local plants and animals, practice outdoor skills, and stretch sensory awareness with games and activities. Some sessions include a morning hike to explore, open time to explore nature, and time to soak in seasonal changes.

• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes and events run in multi-week sessions and short camps across the year, including fall, winter–spring, after-school, summer camp, and sunrise hikes.
• Price: Cost for a parent/child pair is $196 for the session.

Nature Learning Community Youth Programs includes a caregiver/child class for children ages 3–6 that meets outdoors in the forest, where children and their caregivers share community in nature and close class with a light snack and tea. The organization also offers Adult English Conversation sessions where children are welcome, and Sunrise Hikes that are free with registration required. Payment and health/liability forms are required for enrollment, and scholarships are available for programs.

Lead instructors include Syndallas Baughman and Sacha Dansky. Lead teachers are pediatric and adult First Aid/CPR certified and have many years, sometimes decades, of experience working in a wide variety of outdoor settings with youth and adults. Syndallas Baughman earned a B.S. in Biology at the University of Michigan, an M.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine, and holds a secondary teaching certificate in biology. Sacha Dansky designed elementary science curriculum for Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center and was a Naturalist/Field Guide for Mission Trails Regional Park, San Diego Audubon Society, and other environmental and conservation organizations.

Nature Learning Community is a non-profit organization (501c3) that states its mission as gathering in nature to play and learn outdoor skills and to renew connection to the natural world and each other, offering an annual cycle of classes and community events for people of all ages, and building regenerative, nature-connected community in Southeast Michigan. The organization notes that donations help provide scholarships for programs and educational experiences for the public, and that it is building an inclusive community and thanks its supporters and donors. It also states that it has policies for holding community in a peaceful way. Nature and Nurture Farm, where some activities take place, has been designated as an organic farm, and much of its acreage has been committed to conservation.
