Since 2018, Apple Valley JO Volleyball has offered players from across the southern Twin Cities metro the chance to learn and grow as athletes and improve their skills in a competitive, fun and supportive atmosphere. Apple Valley JO Volleyball places players on teams that align with their school grade: 17U with 11th grade, 16U with 10th grade, 15U with 9th grade, 14U with 8th grade, 13U with 7th grade, and 12U with 6th grade and below, and players may be asked to participate with an older age bracket at the discretion of the league director and coaching staff. The Youth Development Team is a shorter season with local matches and is intended to introduce players to competitive volleyball as they approach middle school and beyond.
Valley Athletic Association (VAA), which runs Apple Valley JO Volleyball, is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to serving the youth of ISD 196 communities, with a mission to provide opportunities for athletic and social development through organized sports programs that emphasize fun, growth, and community. VAA states that it values every participant and aims to create an environment where all kids can develop their skills, build confidence, and be part of a supportive team. Apple Valley JO Volleyball is described as one of the fastest-growing city-based JO clubs and will field a record fifteen teams for the 2025–2026 winter club season.
Program fees for all club-level teams 12U–17U include gym costs, tournament entry fees, paid coaches, court equipment (balls, nets, training devices), two short-sleeved game jerseys to keep, team-themed arm sleeves to keep, and a warmup kit with a custom hoodie and sweatpants. Fees do not cover the $25 tryout fee, the $65 USAV membership, personal equipment such as shoes, black shorts or pants, and knee pads, travel costs to and from tournaments including hotel stays and food, or optional attire such as tournament sweatshirts and other spirit wear.
The leadership team connected to the program and the broader association includes Nicole Lyons (VAA Traveling Volleyball Commissioner), Danni Smedstad (President/Treasurer), David Koob (Vice President), Felicia Santana (Secretary), Paul Trottier (Risk Management), Kris Olk (Fields/Risk Management), Erik Handberg (Website/Technology), Jennifer Gates (Risk Mitigation: Compliance), Matt McClimon (Building Maintenance/Marketing), and Trevor O'Shaughnessy (VAA Board Member).
