Discovery Day Camp is a drop-off program run by qualified and trained staff, and staff ratios meet supervision requirements. Discovery Day Camp is open to all youth (boys and girls) entering Kindergarten through 6th grade in the fall. Multiple sessions are offered at a variety of locations, and activities vary by location. Participants are asked to keep cell phones and other electronic devices in their backpacks during the day, and internet accessibility and cell phone coverage is limited at all camp properties. Each youth participant is expected to bring a backpack each day with a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, bug spray, hat or sunglasses, snack, any needed medications, a rain jacket, and a bag lunch, and to wear closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate clothing for spending most of the day outdoors.

Each participant must turn in a printed Camp and Activities Participant Waiver/Health Form at check-in on Monday morning, with a new form required for each session attended, and the form must list an emergency contact and anyone authorized for drop-off or pickup. If a child needs to take medications during the day, parents inform staff at check-in. Groups can be requested with up to two other campers by full name. Financial aid is available for up to 50% of the youth cost. Pocket knives are not sold to anyone under age 18 without permission from a parent or legal guardian.

Camp Northern Star owns and operates eight camp properties and is part of Northern Star Council, Boy Scouts of America, which is an IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Each camp undergoes an annual safety and quality analysis as part of a national camp accreditation program. From camp staff to volunteers, the program follows a mission of discovering the principles of Scouting by delivering fun experiences that build character, citizenship, fitness, and family.
