Bellum Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded in 2017. Its mission is to provide a warm and welcoming environment with an emphasis on self-defense, weight loss, and physical and mental health.

Owner and Professor Derek Barlow received his Black Belt in August 2017 after 9 years of training under Professor Robert Drysdale and Professor Marcelo Nunes and is a 1st Degree Black Belt. Coach Roger received his Brown Belt in 2023 under the instruction of Professor Derek Barlow. Ian Griggs received his Black Belt in the summer of 2023 from Professor Derek Barlow and Professor Robert Drysdale and has spent the last 20 years working in the private security industry, training hundreds of security professionals in use of force, defensive tactics, and personal safety. Youth Coach Susie Zimmer helps coach kids’ classes and helps run Women’s Open Mat sessions.

Parent and student feedback includes comments that instruction from each instructor is “phenomenal” with a focus on one-on-one attention during class so techniques are understood, that the team is “really welcoming and encouraging, especially to beginners,” and that classes are described as “a lot of fun.” One testimonial notes a 50-pound weight loss in the first few months of training, and another describes Bellum as changing the student’s life and offering “a better form of fitness” compared with weight training.
