About

Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring pairs older adults with children for one-on-one time that focuses on reading. Through this program, older adults work one-on-one each week as tutors, mentors, and friends with children, with an emphasis on improving literacy skills. Activities include reading together and building interest in reading and language arts, with attention to self-esteem and class attendance.

Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring is part of Oasis, a national nonprofit organization offering enriching programs for retirees. The program pairs older adults with children in grades K–3 in schools that welcome the program, and Oasis education centers are located in community sites across the country. The network of partners includes health providers, corporations, senior centers, community organizations, libraries, universities and colleges, and senior living organizations. Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring was launched in St. Louis in 1989 and has reached more than 485,000 children since then. Reading scores collected from tutored students in the 2018–2019 school year showed that 98 percent of those students demonstrated improvement. More than 4,000 Oasis tutors volunteer in 14 states in over 20 U.S. cities. Over the years, Oasis has received awards from organizations and agencies including AARP, the U.S. Administration on Aging, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The program is led nationally by Mary Click, national director of the program, and was founded by Marylen Mann, Oasis Founder.
