STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy opened its doors in the fall of 2010. Cindy Wilkins, a Hillsboro resident, mother of eight, and supporter of the performing arts, envisioned a performing arts center for children and reached out to Donald Cleland, and together they gathered additional people and started STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy. At least two of the teachers are credited teachers in the State of Oregon. The mission of STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy is to nurture the artistic, intellectual, and character development of youth and young adults through an educational theatre arts program that develops confidence, respect, cooperation, and creative critical thinking.

The program includes the “I’m a Star” program targeted at actors living with physical and intellectual disabilities ages 13 and up, and Stage Troupers, a group of actors performing musicals throughout the Tri-county area. STAGES Sing-Along Movie Series events feature on-screen lyrics and themed fun, and participants are invited to bring a favorite beanbag, camp chair, or blankets, with the ticket price including a bag of popcorn. A fundraiser event, 2025 Radio Jazz, is listed as a STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy fundraiser, with tickets that include refreshments. Core beliefs listed by STAGES include respect, compassion, dignity, professionalism, community service, education for success, quality productions, and fiscal responsibility.

It is stated as STAGES’ goal to make the academy an integral part of Hillsboro’s art and culture community and to have Stage Troupers perform musicals throughout the Tri-county area. STAGES notes that contributions directly support its mission of shaping the lives of children and young adults through performing arts and that it looks outside its theater walls to serve the community and bring theater to as many children and young adults as possible. STAGES acknowledges a generous grant from RACC that helped make its site possible. The program states that all who come to STAGES are treated in a kind and respectful manner and practice professional theatre etiquette, and that it offers a strong educational program taught by exceptional teachers, with classes and workshops that foster a deeper appreciation of performing arts and the technical aspects of theatre.
