Ability School Summer Camp runs at Ability School and uses the same approach as the school year program, with campers working on individualized programs in the mornings to enhance academic skills in reading, writing, science, study skills, and math. The curriculum focuses on gaining 100% mastery of a lesson or subject before moving on and includes music, creative writing, science, and history, with an emphasis on practical application and hands-on activities and a strong focus on literacy and reading. The camp is self-paced, so children can take extra time on a subject or lesson if needed or move ahead in areas where they excel, with a focus on students as individuals and tailoring their learning experience.
Ability School is one of over 900 schools, educational centers, and activities licensed by Applied Scholastics to use the Study Technology and educational materials developed by educator and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, and is one of over 900 organizations licensed by Applied Scholastics. The school’s mission states that the products of a proper education are self-determined students who are educated to think and learn for themselves, who can competently apply what they have learned to the real world, and that how students learn is as important as what they learn. The mission also states that learning is a skill that must be taught, that correctly teaching this skill allows students to further learn on their own initiative, and that well-educated students will see learning as a joy and an adventure and will be avidly self-motivated, rigorously self-disciplined, and highly self-confident.
Parent testimonials about Ability School report students reading well above grade level with CAT test scores above the national average, including scores more than four years above grade level in subjects such as science, social studies, and math. Parents describe the curriculum as logical and intelligently organized, with students expanding their understanding on a gradient level while feeling challenged, and mention that science checksheets are interesting enough that parents learn from discussing them with their children. Other parents report children who previously disliked school becoming highly motivated and saying they like school, note that children can move at their own speed without being measured against others, and describe daily PE, smaller class sizes, and teachers who make sure students understand each topic fully before moving on. Several parents state that the Applied Scholastics technology far surpasses what is used in public school in their experience, that their children actually learn what they are being taught and enjoy it, and that their children have become honor roll students in high school after attending. Parents also mention that the school embraces diversity, that children learn about different cultures, and that the diverse enrollment allows children to accept everyone without regard to background.
