• Ages: 14–18 years old
• Schedule: Nature Center building open 9am–5pm on weekdays and 1pm–5pm on weekends; trails open from dawn until dusk
Flat Rock Brook offers a teach and learn opportunity for 14–16 year olds as volunteers at the Summer Camp and additional chances to Volunteer at Flat Rock. The Adopt-a-Raptor program and symbolic raptor adoptions support care for birds of prey, and programs are also offered at schools, community events, and other venues with raptor ambassadors. Seasonal bathrooms in the picnic area are typically open daily from 9am–5pm Monday through Friday and 1pm–5pm Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day to early November, and a Group Permit is required for groups of 10 or more. The mission of Flat Rock Brook is to maintain a 150-acre preserve as a natural sanctuary for plants and wildlife in an urban area, to keep it available to the public for trail walks, nature study, and other passive recreation, and to provide year-round environmental education programs for thousands of students and the general public each year. Flat Rock Brook is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization whose preservation and education initiatives are supported through private donations and contributions, event sponsorship, capital project underwriting, and staff volunteerism with corporate and foundation partners.
Flat Rock Brook was founded in 1973 by volunteers and concerned citizens, and the Nature Center interpretive building opened in 1980. The playground project on Jones Road was completed in 2001, the first 46 solar panels were installed in 2009, the “A Walk in the Woods” interpretive exhibit opened in 2012, and the raptor aviary was completed in 2013. The leadership team includes President Chelsea Gleis, Executive Director Stephen Wiessner, and a board of officers, trustees, and honorary trustees, along with staff such as land stewards, a land manager, an accountant, an office manager, a naturalist, a communications manager, and a Land Steward / Raptor Care Specialist. Visitors are required to follow preserve rules that include no grills, barbecues, fires, dogs, bicycles, fishing, or netting, proper disposal of litter, not feeding or disturbing wildlife, and not removing natural materials such as wildlife, flowers, plant matter, or mushrooms.
