Summer camps are led by practicing artists, designers, and animators. Teaching artist Zachary Erdmann holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Visual Arts from The University of the Arts. Elba Rovelli has a BFA in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, taught Portfolio Development at Pratt for 8 years, and has 17 years of experience as an art teacher in the New Jersey public school system. Tina Castiblanco Grammer has a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Parsons School of Design and an MAT from Montclair State University, and she teaches adult classes.
The program’s mission states that One River School has transformed the summer camp experience by developing creative camps. Lesson plans draw inspiration from contemporary artists, and mentors provide expert feedback and facilitate group critique. Art Shuffle classes follow a curriculum of month-long projects focused on drawing, painting, and mixed media, while Art Shuffle Plus offers open studio classes where students work on projects of their choosing with instructor guidance. Focus classes offer longer-format projects including animation, cosplay, painting, and other specialty materials.
Over 100 weekly camp options are available, including half and full day choices, and camps are described as being for students of all ages and skill levels. The program offers Summer Club as a more flexible class experience designed to fit summer plans, with exclusive perks, swag, and bring-a-friend opportunities for members. Small classes with personalized attention are available for adults, and the program offers unlimited makeup options for classes. Families are asked to pack a light, nut-free snack and water bottle for camp, and a nut-free lunch if staying for the whole day, and students are advised to wear comfortable, art-friendly clothing.
