The South Mountain YMCA mission is to strengthen the Maplewood and South Orange community by offering high-quality childcare, youth enrichment, and family-focused programs that help children grow and parents thrive. The organization is part of the Metro YMCA of the Oranges, which lists accreditations and states its mission as strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Community involvement includes Racing for a Cause, One Duck at a Time through the annual Duck Race, which raises funds for local families.
The program’s unique features include infant care, after-school programs, summer camps, teen leadership opportunities, affordable fitness options, and a School’s Out Vacation Camp available on days when public schools are closed. The Future Makers Entrepreneurial Program develops an understanding of key business concepts and results in a business plan, marketing plan, and budget or revenue stream. The American Red Cross-sponsored babysitter training class includes CPR and First Aid, and participants are asked to bring a peanut-free lunch while all other materials are provided. Summer Camp Virtual Open Houses give families a way to explore camp activities, outdoor adventures, staff, and community, and Healthy Kids Day is described as the Y’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids.
KinderDucks Basketball is described as an environment structured to provide consistent, low-pressure playing opportunities without the intensity often associated with traditional team settings, with staff supervision to support fair teams, positive sportsmanship, and a fun, competitive atmosphere. Ducks Basketball Fundamental Skills Academy is for players who are newer to basketball or still building foundational skills and focuses on dribbling, passing, shooting, footwork, finishing, defense, and basic game understanding, with multiple dates and times to choose from. Through the Y For All Financial Assistance Program and the Y for All Fund, qualifying families may receive reduced tuition rates for child care and summer camp.
