The South Mountain YMCA mission states that it strengthens the Maplewood and South Orange community by offering high-quality childcare, youth enrichment, and family-focused programs that help children grow and parents thrive. Its community involvement includes the Duck Race, which raises vital funds for local families, and Healthy Kids Day, which is the Y’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids. The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges lists accreditations under the heading “METRO YMCA OF THE ORANGES ACCREDITATIONS.”
The Future Makers Entrepreneurial Program includes development of a business plan, marketing plan, and budget or revenue stream. The American Red Cross-sponsored babysitter training class includes CPR and First Aid, and participants are asked to bring a peanut-free lunch, with all other materials provided. Kids Night Out events include a pizza dinner, and Little Night Owls events are led by South Mountain YMCA Early Childhood Learning Center staff.
KinderDucks Basketball offers separate sessions for girls and boys in an environment structured to provide consistent, low-pressure playing opportunities without the intensity often associated with traditional team settings. Staff supervision in KinderDucks Basketball helps ensure fair teams, positive sportsmanship, and a fun, competitive atmosphere. Ducks Basketball Fundamental Skills Academy focuses on dribbling, passing, shooting, footwork, finishing, defense, and basic game understanding, and emphasizes instruction, repetition, and confidence-building through age-appropriate drills, games, and guided activities, with multiple dates and times to choose from.
