Spanish That Sticks was created by Ellen, a former classroom Spanish teacher and academic coach who is now fully dedicated to private tutoring. Ellen is a former high school Spanish teacher with 15 years of experience teaching and tutoring Spanish and taught in classrooms for 8 years before taking time away from her career to raise and teach her own children. She studied Spanish while living in Spain and Mexico and mastered Spanish fluency while teaching English in Ecuador. She earned a Master Degree in Education, is certified to teach Spanish in New Jersey, and has taught students of all ages and at all levels of Spanish proficiency in large classes, small groups, and one-on-one. She has extensive experience working with students with learning differences such as ADHD, auditory processing disorder, dyslexia, and other language-based learning disorders.
The program follows a context-based approach to language teaching in which students and Ellen talk about their lives, create stories together, role-play, and discuss articles and videos in the target language. Students acquire language by learning and retaining vocabulary and grammatical structures in this way, and Ellen teaches study skills and strategies such as creating memory devices and grammar checklists so students can become successful independent learners.
Spanish That Sticks offers Spanish tutoring and instruction for adults to learn Spanish through stories and conversation, as well as focused tutoring for middle, high school, and college students to succeed in Spanish class. One-on-one lessons are created specific to a student's learning style and interests, and the program is available online.
Parent and student feedback includes comments that Ellen connected with a high school student who was struggling with concepts and helped identify weak areas in each chapter, that the student looked forward to every session, and that the parent felt relieved to find her. Other feedback describes Ellen as well-prepared for lessons, combining conversation with grammar reviews and offering homework such as readings and podcasts, and notes that a student headed into Spanish 3 well prepared after working with her.
