Teen Treks is a not-for-profit organization leading self-supported bike trips for teenagers and is described as the Original Teen Bike Tour Program. Self-contained biking groups include two college-age leaders with safety certifications and up to ten teenagers who camp and stay in hostels on regional and cross-country bike trips, with small group size emphasized as having big personal impact. Teen Treks started in 2001 and, since 2001, has led thousands of teens on immersive bike travel experiences across North America and Europe; it later became an independent non-profit hosting 17 bike adventures across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The program’s mission is to help teens discover their independence, build lifelong friendships and memories, and see the world from the saddle, with trips described as unplugged, unscripted and unforgettable, and featuring no phones and no screens for real connection with people. Teen Treks was birthed out of the American Youth Hostel (AYH) Movement, which began with a bike trip from Niagara-Toronto nearly 25 years ago, and is also described as birthed out of the Youth Hostel Movement. Teen Treks states that it fosters self-reliance, community, and self-discovery through unplugged bike adventures that inspire problem-solving and embody the heart of travel, and that teens gain camping skills, backpacking skills, and budget travel skills while enjoying the freedom of exploration. The organization highlights 20+ years of operation, safety dedication, parental peace of mind, happy teenagers, and authentic summer camp and hostel based lodging. The leadership team includes Derek Bateman (Director), Tyler Madell (Vice President), Cliff Madell (Executive Director), Elliott Carlson (Treasurer), and Katie Barnhill (Program Coordinator).
Testimonials include a trekker who called Teen Treks “a unique way to learn to live away from home, cook, live on a budget, repair mechanical things, interact with new people, see the country... the ultimate college prep.” A parent shared that their son came home feeling accomplished, self-confident, and with friends he hopes to keep in touch with. Another trekker described the 1,000 Mile Trek from Chicago to NYC as one of the best experiences of their life, saying they met amazing people and learned a lot about themselves in the process.
