Teen Treks started in 2001 and operates as a not for profit program. Since 2001, it has led thousands of teens on immersive bike travel experiences across North America and Europe in self-contained biking groups that include two leaders and up to ten teenagers, with treks at easy, moderate, and challenging difficulty levels. Teen Treks trips are described as unplugged, unscripted, and focused on teen bike tours that are about more than pedaling from point A to point B, with an emphasis on giving teens space to grow, challenge themselves, and connect with nature, with others, and with who they are becoming. The program’s mission is to help teens discover their independence, build lifelong friendships and memories, and see the world from the saddle, with teens gaining camping skills, backpacking skills, and budget travel skills while enjoying the freedom of exploration. Teen Treks describes itself as the original teen bike tour program and highlights small group size, summer camping and hostel-based lodging, no phones or screens, and college-age leaders with safety certifications.
Every trip is led by certified, background-checked leaders who are trained in first aid, bike safety, and youth mentorship. The leadership team includes Derek Bateman (Director), Tyler Madell (Vice President), Cliff Madell (Executive Director), Elliott Carlson (Treasurer), and Katie Barnhill (Program Coordinator).
Teen testimonials describe Teen Treks as a great adventure, a great alternative to summer camp, and a unique way to learn to live away from home, cook, live on a budget, repair mechanical things, interact with new people, and see the country, with one teen calling it “the ultimate college prep.” Teens report making new friends, gaining a sense of independence, and experiencing memorable trips such as a 1000 mile challenge and a trek from New York City to Montreal, with comments about tight-knit groups, fun activities outside of biking, and a sense of teamwork and accomplishment. Parent testimonials note that Teen Treks mixed educational activities with fun, that leaders were excellent, and that teens felt safe, comfortable, and happy under their care, with one parent describing their teen becoming more confident about cycling and eager to continue on more Teen Treks adventures.
