Westmoreland Sanctuary was established in 1957 by Helen Clay Frick and has grown from an original 85-acre parcel to 669.6 acres with multiple bodies of water, including Bechtel Lake, and all lakes and streams are part of the Mianus River Watershed. The organization offers over 100 programs and states a mission to acquire, conserve, and enrich land for the free use, enjoyment, and education of all, with conservation efforts focused on unique and fragile habitats. It holds a Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency on GuideStar.

The organization notes that refunds are provided when a program cancels, such as in the case of inclement weather, and that when a participant chooses not to attend after payment, funds can be used to buy or increase membership level or as a credit to another program. Community involvement includes volunteers, internship participation, and support and funding from partners such as Rusticus Garden Club, Bedford Garden Club, Con Edison, Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, Bedford Riding Lanes Association, Hudson Valley Orienteering, Marsh Sanctuary, Friends of Bedford Burial Ground, and the NY-NJ Trail Conference.
