Westmoreland Sanctuary Camps and Youth Programs offers activities such as Young Birder’s Club, Eco Explorers, Mommy & Me: Animal Kingdom, Pre-K Programs, Junior Programs, and Summer Camps, along with Adult & Family Programs. Westmoreland Sanctuary was established in 1957 and grew from an original 85-acre parcel to 669.6 acres through donated and purchased parcels of land. In 1973, the Nature Center was reconstructed from a 200-year-old church that originally stood in Bedford Village, NY. The organization’s mission is for members to fund its work to acquire, conserve, and enrich land for the free use, enjoyment, and education of all. Westmoreland Sanctuary holds a Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency on GuideStar.
The organization offers over 100 programs spanning topics such as maple sugaring, bird banding, and floral design, and uses hands-on curricula for children and young adults that incorporates the Next Generation Science Standards. The Mommy & Me: Animal Kingdom program runs all year round and includes 45 minutes to pet and learn about an animal friend followed by 45 minutes of self-directed play, with coloring books and animal crackers provided. The Eco Explorers program is available by request, and groups can register up to 15 participants. For the Mommy & Me: Animal Kingdom program, Westmoreland Sanctuary provides coloring books and animal crackers.
Westmoreland Sanctuary states that its work is made possible through an enthusiastic and active community, with options to join as a volunteer or participate in an internship program. Its 2024 valued partners include Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, Bedford Riding Lanes Association, Hudson Valley Orienteering, Marsh Sanctuary, Friends of Bedford Burial Ground, and NY-NJ Trail Conference, with funding support from Con Edison and Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area. The organization thanks Rusticus Garden Club and Bedford Garden Club for nominating it, and thanks Con Edison for support. The refund policy states that refunds are given when a program cancels, and if a participant chooses not to attend after payment, funds can be used to buy or increase membership level or as a credit to another program.
