Since 1988, Children’s Museum of the Arts has been changing the way people value young artists and their aesthetic contributions to the world. The organization’s mission is to unite children and artists to create and share ambitious works of art with their communities and the world. After a decade of building bonds with schools and community groups citywide, with a focus on connecting with young artists typically disenfranchised from the story of art, the organization used the pandemic period to transform its approach by prioritizing partnerships with schools and community groups in neighborhoods across New York City and beyond. For over 15 years, it has connected local artists to low-income schools through its Accessible Arts program, and for the 2023–24 school year, three Resident Artists are implementing ambitious arts curriculum at partner sites including Hudson Guild in Chelsea, Sid Miller Academy in Crown Heights, and Children’s Workshop School.

Children’s Museum of the Arts has pledged to make all of its programs 100% free of charge and holds a collection of works by children from over 50 countries dating back nearly a century. Its unique initiatives include an online learning platform called The Look Make Show, The Residency for Experimental Arts Education, and the Emergency Arts Education Fund. The program treats children, educators, artists, and audiences as mutual aesthetic learners, and it describes the concept of a museum as changing from a place to an ambition. One parent shared, “Children’s Museum of the Arts is a world apart from most of what is out there … The magic of being presented with materials and then being free to be creative has opened up a new world.”
