Kids of Summer Sports NYC is a family business led by Executive Director Mike Handell, Program Director Brian Handell, Camp Director Francesca Gioeli, and Assistant Director/Director of Basketball Caden Burton. The program began in 2002 as a six-week summer baseball clinic and expanded over the years to include basketball in 2011, the NY Bluebirds travel baseball organization in 2013, flag football in 2017, and the Rookie Multi-Sport Camp for younger campers in 2022. Its stated goal at the start was to offer NYC children and families access to quality, fun, affordable, and local baseball instruction in the summer months. Thanks to the support of families, the community, and coaches, Kids of Summer Sports NYC now trains more than 1,000 children each year, and 2026 marks its 25th anniversary, with 2026 summer camp registration open.
Parents describe the coaches as great, warm, and interested in the kids, and note that the program is fun, affordable, well organized, and professional. Families report long-term involvement across sports camps and travel teams, and some children return year after year and look forward to becoming counselors when they are old enough. Multiple parents mention that their children’s skills have improved, that the coaches focus on teaching fundamental skills, and that the program has become an important part of their children’s sports and social lives.
