Students also take part in activities like the Student Choreography Program and one-day Workshops.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: This program is offered in two sessions: August 3–7 and August 10–14.
Founded by George Balanchine in 1934, the School of American Ballet is the official school of New York City Ballet and is described as the preeminent ballet school in the United States. Its alumni comprise more than 95% of New York City Ballet and also fill the ranks of companies across the United States and around the world. The school states that it trains talented dancers from diverse backgrounds for professional careers in ballet while enriching the life of every student and that it has trained more dancers for careers in professional ballet than any other U.S. school.
The program includes an Integrated Approach to Wellness through SAB’s Artistic Health & Wellness Student Center, which is described as integrating physical health, mental well-being, and education into the student experience so that dancers are trained as both artists and whole individuals. SAB notes that myriad resources are dedicated to the care and development of each student, and that the Center is designed to integrate physical health, mental well-being, and education into the student experience.
SAB also offers educational seminars for adults, Alumni Homecoming Week, and an Alumni Encore Virtual Open House. Community Auditions for SAB’s Winter Term for children ages 6–10 are taking place in Harlem, Queens, and the Bronx. SAB’s first female choreography fellow, Emily Kikta, and students created works supported by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. The School of American Ballet facility is not open to the public, and tours are generally not available.
