The CCNY STEM Institute was initiated in 1992. Its mission is to challenge, inspire and prepare underrepresented middle and high school students to succeed through its free STEM and test prep programs. The program offers continuous programmatic support during pre-college, undergraduate, and graduate years, with high school and middle school programs that have grade-aligned courses for grades 9–12 and 6–8. It includes a Summer Bridge Program tailor-made for rising 9th graders to close academic gaps in English and Math, a Summer Institute that offers college-level study and the opportunity to earn college credits while in high school, and a Saturday Program that offers college-like courses in a campus setting during the academic year. Programs are aligned with the latest State learning and testing standards, and they are designed for students who reside in or study within Northern Manhattan and the greater New York City area, with a diverse array of classes offered both in person and online, subject to student enrollment. The STEM Institute states a commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse learning environment welcoming students from all backgrounds and abilities.

The STEM Institute is a collaborative initiative between The City College of New York’s Office of the Senior Associate Provost, the New York City Council’s 10th District, the STEP Program, the Lincoln Fund, the Dorr Foundation, Standard Chartered, the New York City Department of Education, and the Center for the Advancement of Hispanics in Science and Engineering Education (CAHSEE). The Afternoon Engagement program includes partnerships with organizations such as the CCNY Landscape Architecture program, The Hispanic Society Museum, The NYC Public Library, LAESA SHPE, BioBus, and Science Departments at CCNY.
