About
Yorkville Tennis Club Junior Programs offers tennis for kids using activities such as running, jumping, throwing, bouncing, catching, tennis stroke technique, rally basics, serve development, point play, and live ball situations. As players progress, the program includes advanced stroke technique, spin, combining shots together with purpose, approaching the net to use volleys, overheads, and advanced technical and tactical skills. The Three's Program uses foam or red balls, 17 or 19 inch rackets, and mini courts, and each first-time student in that program is given a brand new racket to begin the new session.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Program options are available for different age groups throughout the week, with classes offered Monday through Friday in the afternoon and early evening, and on Sundays in the morning and early afternoon. Programs operate 7am to 11pm every day of the week.
Since 1993, Yorkville Tennis Club Junior Programs has followed the mandated United States Tennis Association system for Red Ball 1 and 2 and the USTA Junior Pathway for Orange Ball, Green Ball, and Yellow Ball. Red Ball 1 and 2 use lower pressure red dot balls on 36-foot courts, Orange Ball uses lower pressure orange dot balls on 60-foot courts, Green Ball uses lower pressure green dot balls on 78-foot courts, and Yellow Ball uses full pressure yellow balls on 78-foot courts. Red Ball 1 and 2 have a maximum of 4 players per group with a general 4:1 student/instructor average ratio, and Orange Ball, Green Ball, and Yellow Ball have a maximum of 6 players per court with a general 4:1 student/instructor average ratio.
The Three's Program is for 3-year-olds as an introduction to tennis. Red Ball 1 is for ages 4–5 and Red Ball 2 is for ages 6–7. Orange Ball is for ages 8–9, and applicants must be 8 years old at the time of program start. Green Ball is for ages 10–11, and applicants must be at least 10 years old at the time of program start. Yellow Ball is for ages 12 and up, and applicants must be at least 12 years old at the time of program start. The Beginners Program is for kids ages 8 and older who have never played or never had any formal instruction.
The High Performance – Yellow Ball program uses full pressure yellow balls and is for kids at a higher skill level who are preparing for competition. Acceptance to High Performance – Yellow Ball is subject to approval by the Junior Directors and is for goal oriented competitive players and self-motivated players who want to work hard and improve. The programs feature low student/teacher ratios and carefully selected coaches, and no membership is required. Yorkville Tennis Club notes that additional playing options are available at its sister clubs, Sutton East Tennis Club and Vanderbilt Tennis Club in Grand Central Terminal. The junior programs are led by Director Michael Filipek and Assistant Director Rick LaVere.
