Theater O states that its motto is “Listen. Learn. Imagine. Perform.” and that it believes young people are artists and treats them that way. It states that theater teaches collaboration, builds self-confidence, engages children physically and mentally, allows children’s stories to come alive, builds friendships and memories, and teaches listening to each other, instincts, bodies, and selves. Theater O states that it offers classes for all experience levels, from beginner through advanced, to develop fundamental theater skills while maintaining a sense of fun and play. The program describes its curricula as giving children a “theatrical toolbox,” with each class stressing a skillset that enhances skills needed in other classes and in life. Theater O notes that it is a place where the benefits of theater can come alive within children and that summer registration is open.
The Theater O faculty is described as a team of theater professionals who are experts in their craft and experienced educators. The leadership and teaching team includes Artistic Director Jessica Irons (Acting, Design, Directing, and Fairytale Theater), General Manager Kate Nolan, Associate Director and Resident Designer Andrew Irons (Playwriting, Puppetry, Improv), Associate Director and Musical Theater/Show Camp instructor Aya Abdallah, Performing Stories faculty members Kathryn Alexander, Jessica Carmen Courtney (also Fairy Tale Theater), and Stephanie Granade, High School Theater Experience Acting faculty member Jonny Kaplan, Performing Stories, High School Theater Experience Improv, and Middle School Improv faculty member Allison Mitchell, and Musical Theater accompanist Rachel Murphy.
One parent, Heather Schnieder, states that her family has “nothing but positive things to say about theater O and the experiences they have provided our daughter,” and that they have watched their daughter gain confidence, face fears, and expand creativity so her acting abilities can shine. She also states that Theater O is dedicated to each student, that her daughter feels she belongs there, and that they feel lucky to be part of what she describes as a creative and positive experience.
