Brighton Rowing Club (BRC), founded 1998, is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. It serves eligible 7–12 grade students from Brighton and neighboring communities in the Rochester NY area that do not have rowing programs of their own. Coaches are the only paid staff. All equipment is provided, and the program includes both instructional and competitive rowing, with participation in 4–5 regattas each fall and spring season. The program is described as “The ultimate team Sport!” and is noted as excellent cross-training, a total-body workout, and having low injury risk. No prior rowing experience or participation in a Learn to Row program is required. Participant fees cover coaching, facilities, equipment, and regatta costs, and private donations help expand and improve the program. Rowers from Brighton Rowing Club have been recruited by and gone on to row at multiple colleges and universities, including Annapolis, Brown, Bryn Mawr, Delaware, Duquesne, Georgetown, Hamilton, Hobart, Ithaca, Princeton, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. Joe’s, St. John Fisher, Stanford, Trinity, Tulane, University of Buffalo, University of Connecticut, University of Pennsylvania, University of Rochester, Vassar, Villanova, William Smith, Wisconsin, Yale, and other colleges.
