Camp Hillard was founded in 1929 by Morris and Hannah Libman, and the Libman family has continued to own and operate Westchester's first day camp, with a tradition of excellence that spans four generations of single family ownership. Camp Hillard is celebrating 98 years of camping excellence and is the second oldest privately owned day camp in the United States. The program is described as Westchester's outstanding summer day camp and Westchester's first day camp, and it offers programs for campers ages 3 to 13.
Carefully selected staff are described as mature, caring, and well-organized. Camp is led by a team of 30 key staff members called the Leadership Team, composed of teachers, educators, and leaders in the field of camping. Key email contacts include Directors Jon Libman ([email protected]), Jim Libman ([email protected]), and Kathleen Libman ([email protected]). The air-conditioned Health Center is run by an on-site staff of RNs and Nurse's Assistants and has tie-ins to local emergency services.
Camp Hillard is accredited and approved by the American Camping Association and always receives the highest ratings for quality standards of program, staffing, and facility. Camp Hillard has a permit to operate issued by the New York State Department of Health and is inspected twice annually by the Westchester County Department of Health, with all inspection reports filed with the Department of Health. Daily transportation is provided from Manhattan, Riverdale, Greenwich CT, and all of Westchester County, and all transportation vehicles are professionally driven, air conditioned, equipped with seat belts and 2-way radios, and supervised by camp staff. A professional kitchen staff provides nutritious and well-planned daily menus with a variety of lunches and afternoon refreshments, including weekly cookouts.
Camp Hillard serves families from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Riverdale, and throughout Westchester County and the Greenwich, CT area. One parent testimonial states that their daughters had “the best time,” describing every aspect as “flawless,” and specifically mentioning the theater performance, swim, sports, and the daily bus ride as “amazing,” and noting that Hillard holds a special place in their family’s hearts. The camp’s mission statement from founder Morris N. Libman is: “Camp Hillard is a place where our entire thoughts and energies are wrapped up in the health, happiness and well-being of every child.”
