DNA Learning Center Science Camps and Programs

DNA Learning Center Science Camps and Programs includes field trips at DNALC locations with experiment-based activities such as DNA Extraction from Wheat Germ, Pollen Tells a Story, Bacterial Transformation, DNA Restriction Analysis, DNA Fingerprint, Detecting a Jumping Gene, Human Mitochondrial Sequencing, and Forensic DNA Profiling. It also offers d6tzi the Iceman Field Trips with guided tours and additional hands-on, dOtzi-inspired labs, plus in-school instruction for tri-state area schools only.

• Field Trips at DNALC Locations — Grades 3–6, Grades 7–9, Grades 10–12, AP Biology, HS Life Science/Biology, Forensics, Ötzi/Museum · $450–$880 per class
• In-school Instruction — grades 5–8 · $1,500 per day · In-school instruction (up to 5 periods per day) for tri-state area schools only.
• Ötzi the Iceman Field Trips — Grades 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12 · Stand-alone guided tours and packages with additional hands-on, Ötzi-inspired labs.
• DNA Extraction from Wheat Germ — Grades 5, 6, 7, & 8 · Lab time: 1 hour.
• Pollen Tells a Story — Lab time: 1 hour.
• Field Trips at DNALC NYC — Classes and disciplines · Experiment-based field trips for City Tech faculty to use in a variety of classes and disciplines.
• Bacterial Transformation — Lab time: 2.5 hours.
• DNA Restriction Analysis — Lab time: 3.5 hours.
• DNA Fingerprint — Lab time: 2 hours.
• Detecting a Jumping Gene — In-Person Lab time: 4 hours.
• Human Mitochondrial Sequencing — In-Person Lab time: 4 hours.
• Forensic DNA Profiling — In-Person Lab time: 4 hours.

• Facility hours: The Dolan DNA Learning Center is open to the public Monday-Friday, 10 am-4 pm. Closed on Saturday and Sunday, with the exception of Saturdays when offering Ötzi tours or Saturday DNA! programs.

About the provider

The DNA Learning Center was established in 1988 and has been advancing genetics education through laboratory experiences for students and educators in New York and beyond. Its Citizen DNA Barcode Network engages community research teams as they use DNA barcoding to explore biodiversity in their area.

Financial assistance is available for Title 1 schools booking field trips at the DNALC NYC or Harlem DNA Lab. All cancellations must be made in writing or by calling/emailing the booking contact on confirmation paperwork. At least 2-weeks notice is required for cancellations or reservation changes, including the number of lab classrooms required. Schools that fail to adhere to this policy will be responsible to pay the fee for each lab room reserved. Schools with repeated late cancellations or no-shows will not be permitted to make future bookings.
