Students on science field trips learn from experienced educators. Since the DNA Learning Center was established in 1988, more than 750,000 middle and high school students have taken part in its hands-on science instruction over the last 35+ years. The mission of DNA Learning Center Science Camps and Programs is to advance genetics education through laboratory experiences for students and educators in New York and beyond. The DNA Learning Center is described as world-renowned, and its largest center is DNALC NYC in Brooklyn, with a new center in Wayne, New Jersey. Student research programs on Long Island and in New York City allow participants to conduct authentic research in school or alongside scientists, and Advanced Placement Biology lab techniques can be covered through extended lab experiences. DNALC media offers educational, media-rich sites and animations on topics from cancer to eugenics, as well as lab and bioinformatics sites on subjects such as human origins and RNA-sequencing. The Citizen DNA Barcode Network engages community research teams in using DNA barcoding to explore biodiversity in their area, and the DNALC Partners in STEM Center at Arecibo Observatory is supported by a $5 million NSF investment.
